Danske Møbler is a family owned and operated New Zealand Company inspired by scandinavian style designs brought here by Danske Møbler founders Ken and Bente Winter.
After Immigrating to Auckland from Aarhus, Denmark in the mid-50’s and using Ken’s considerable experience in the Danish furniture industry, Ken and Bente established Ken Winter Limited which designed, manufactured and supplied scandinavian inspired furniture to retailers. Demand for their products grew enough for the Winter’s to open their first retail store in 1962 in Auckland.
Danske Møbler was born in 1964 and due to furniture importing restrictions in the early 60’s New Zealanders had begun seeking out design oriented furniture retailers. Danske Møbler was placed to become a leading retailer of moderately priced yet aesthetically advanced furniture.
In 1968 demand for Danske Møbler was growing and eventually surpassed the capacity of their manufacturing facility which led to a move to a bigger premises. This move allowed Karen and Bente to amalgamate the production and retail facilities into one premises and the ability to expand to neighbouring building in future.
Increased capacity coupled with success in the local market allowed Danske Møbler could expand internationally with exports to USA and Europe and also being showcased at the Chelsea Flower Show and other leading international events.
In 1995 Ken and Bente’s eldest son Allan, who had been a part of the business from the start, took over the company with his wife Kerry who continue to operate it today ensuring Danske Møbler stays true to its origins of stylish and affordable scandinavian designed furniture while being accessible to all with stores from Whangarei to Invercargill and their furniture in many more retailers country wide.
